In the haze of a post-Zonker Harris Day Sunday, METHOD recommends an afternoon listening to Tiny Hands' EP, released just this month.
The pop project of Jacob Masters ('15), the EP was produced by Alix Masters (his twin sis), and Sean Eads, otherwise known as Austin's Triangle Park. Through their use of everything from poppy synths to thick moody harmonizers, each song brings a new element to the listener's experience. "It's cinematic," Jacob says. Perhaps an effect of his last year working for a film composer in LA.
When I ask Jacob about his influences, the artist mentions everyone from Brian Wilson to Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak. Each track conveys a different mood and tone, showcasing the range of Jacob's vocal abilities honed after four years with the Wesleyan Spirits. "We wanted to give the listener something different while giving something they can hold on to," he wrote over email.
After four years studying in Wesleyan's Music Department, Jacob's EP is evidence of his own diversity of experiences. Just last spring, he directed Gwen Stefani numbers in the campus musical TRAGIKINGDOM while also conducting a full orchestra in his thesis, "Exploring F#".
Now, a year since his graduation, Tiny Hands is getting covered by blogs like Killing Moon, All Things Go, and We Heart Music. In the next couple months, we can expect a music video for "Wherever U R" and a late Summer tour.
