Very few of us were cool in the mid 2000s. But if you were, you might recognize Music Editor Isadora Spillman-Schappell (or Izzy, as we call her) as the drummer from Care Bears on Fire.
Izzy began playing for the pop-punk band when she was eight years old. They released their first album in 2007 and their second in 2009. They were lowkey huge. AKA Spin Magazine once called them "...key players in the burgeoning New York kid-core scene..."
They looked like this:
If you weren’t attending rock shows in downtown NYC as a middle schooler then maybe you recognize Izzy from Faceplant, Wesleyan’s very own all-girl punk band. They looked like this:
And sounded like this.
What started as a group of friends in September became a widely appreciated female punk presence, performing at events like Westco formal, Panty Punk and Punk at DKE. Here they are at Art House:
If you tune in to WESU 88.1 FM on Thursday nights you'll hear her as Dj Dora with her show Girls to the Front. But hello!!! You can also read her work on Method, like this piece on the punk scene at schools in Connecticut.
Coming up this month, she’s working with staff on making our playlists, the most recent two being “I Hate Being Home My High School Ex Sucks” and "Close My Eyes and Pretend to have a Social Life." You can see more on our Soundcloud.
We thank our lucky stars that Isadora's on staff because quite frankly, she keeps us cool.
