As the year begins, we are faced with the question “what will we be?” As far as students, we can hope to be hardworking, studious, and determined. As people, we can hope to be honest, empathetic, and brave. As a school, we can hope to be aware, present, and active. But as a publication, what can we hope to be?
I’ve been on Method since the beginning of my freshman year. I was drawn to it by the way editors seemed to pull a community together, publishing works by people I had never met, students I had never known. I loved the way Method presented art and expression as a way to connect, and offered a way to collaborate. To me, Method has always been a place where individuals could bring their work and give it a voice. Without judgment, without exclusion, only with a deep sense of duty to the art and the artist. To amplify the work of our peers and give it a place to be seen.
Throughout the years, throughout the many months, and many more weeks, it has at times been difficult to remember this feeling. Producing content has seemed more like a job than a passion, the pressures of scheduling and organizing sometimes clouding the love of the work. But for me, and hopefully for everyone else involved, these past few years have been full of more artistry and expression than I could have hoped for. I feel that it is my job, as Editor in Chief, to offer the school what was offered to me as a freshman: a space to come together and showcase student work so that it can be seen and appreciated.
A lot is expected of Method Magazine. At times we have forgotten the nature of our publication, offending where we meant to humor, excluding where we meant to invite. But our original goals still hold true, and we continue to work toward them.
So, this year, what will we be? Method will be a platform for the Wesleyan community. But even more than that, where will we go? We will strive to be a place that is inclusive, creative, and encouraging. We will be thoughtful. We will be expressive. We will be open, aware, and imaginative. And I look forward to where this year takes us.
Editor in Chief,
