MESSAGE FROM THE WESLEYAN STUDENT UNION:
The Wesleyan University administration has consistently demonstrated a severe lack of responsible leadership, meaningful transparency, and consistent accountability. The University fails to protect the safety and well-being of its students, especially historically marginalized groups, instead prioritizing its reputation and wealth accumulation.
Therefore, we, the students of Wesleyan University, resolve to create a student union to advocate and act on our own behalf. The Student Union will be independent from the institution in order to maintain financial and organizational autonomy. The Student Union holds justice, collectivism, and solidarity at its core. It acknowledges the emotional, intellectual and physical labor put into the University by students and demands a supportive environment. The Student Union acknowledges that the current failings of the University come not from the tireless work of students but from the shortcomings of the institution. The Union envisions holding collective bargaining power to advocate for the needs and rights of the students.
The Student Union is organized horizontally and aims to center the voices of students who need the union most. It will work to achieve transparency in administrative decisions, hiring and firing practices, and university policy. It requires that the administration be accountable to students for actions and commitments; this accountability must be grounded in student realities and experiences.
The Student Union demands more direct access to the Board of Trustees, voice in administrative decisions, and an impactful role in campus discourse with respect to such decisions. We stand in solidarity with staff and faculty unions. We refuse to be complacent in the face of injustice.
