I first met Nick Galang (founder/designer for Tōpia Clothing) at a monthly event for local designers and pop-ups. My friend Emily and I were immediately struck by how well constructed and executed Nick's designs were—very reminiscent of clothes we've seen at VFILES, but with cultural references specifically geared towards a Hawaii audience. Immediately, I struck up a conversation with him and told him I wanted to help his designs reach a larger network of people.
"tōpia", is a suffix taken from the greek word τόπος, meaning, "a place". I teamed up with Nick and two of my friends (Christian Aloisio, Aiala Rickard) to capture some of the pieces from Tōpia SS15 in a way that would evoke an idealized sense of place. From rich color block tees with matching five-panel hats to all-over printed patterns, Tōpia's tropical influence definitely makes you yearn for a getaway.
